Out of the Classroom

There’s more to Auburn Engineering than academics. We know that preparing the next generation of engineers is as much about what you learn in the classroom and laboratories as what you learn out of the classroom.

That’s why Auburn University’s Samuel Ginn College of Engineering provides a wide range of opportunities to participate in extracurricular activities. In addition, the college offers an extensive list of services and resources to expand your horizons and prepare for the future.

Over the next few months, we are going to share with you a sampling of these offerings and opportunities.

As a member of the Auburn University Marching Band, I took a trip to Ireland during spring break to march in the St. Patrick’s Day Festival parades in Limerick and Dublin. The trip to Ireland was fantastic. It is truly the Emerald Isle, because there were still fields of green everywhere separated by fences made of stone in the late winter. I was able to view a great majority of the country side in central Ireland. The band took a trip to the famous Cliffs of Moher which stands as high as 400 feet above the Atlantic Ocean. Then, we went to the city of Galway which is the fastest growing city in Ireland.

In Limerick, we marched in the St. Patrick’s Day Parade and to our surprise were awarded the best marching band and best band overall awards. It was a surprise, because we were not told we were competing in a contest until we finished the parade. After the parade, we headed to Dublin which is located on the far east side of Ireland from Limerick.

"Dublin is the capital of Ireland, so the parade there was a lot bigger than the one in Limerick. It took three hours for every parade participant to go through the parade route. After finishing the parade, we were treated to lunch at the Guinness Factory located in the middle of Dublin. While at Guinness, we played in their center performance area which is shaped like a pint of Guinness. After performing, we were given a tour of the factory and were able to view the whole city of Dublin from the top of the Guinness Factory. Our last day in Ireland was spent touring at places like Trinity Church, O’Connell St., and St. Patrick’s Cathedral. The experience of going to Ireland was amazing, and I would love to go back again to visit the rest of the country."
